Elon Musk is currently the 2nd richest man in the world. In January he was the 35th. Musk, the maverick chief executive of Tesla, has overtaken Bill Gates to become the world’s second-richest person with a $128bn fortune after the electric car company he helped found 17 years ago soared in value to more than $500bn.
For most people, 2020 hasn’t been a great or even good year, but for Elon it’s probably been the best of his life. This year alone he made more than 100 billion dollars due to Tesla’s value skyrocketing past 500 billion dollars to a total of 517 billion dollars. He owns 20% of the company, so this earned him the whopping 100 billion dollars, making him worth 128.6 billion dollars in total.
This made him overtake Bill Gates (who’s worth 118 billion) as the 2nd richest man in the world, and his only competitor is now Jeff Bezos, who owns Amazon, who is worth 185 billion dollars (67 billion made this year alone).
If Elon Musk manages to make Tesla be worth 650 billion dollars by 2028 he will receive a bonus of 55.8 billion dollars. Even if he manages to do that, he will still be worth less than Jeff Bezos as he will surely make many more billion dollars in the following years. If Elon wants to overtake Jeff, he will have to make a few other lucrative deals.
