BioNTech was founded in 2008 by German scientists Uğur Şahin, and Özlem Türeci. Sahin and Tureci met in Germany at the start of their academic careers and bonded over a shared passion for cancer research. The couple even began their wedding day in the research lab.
After reading about the coronavirus in January. They assembled their team and began ”Project lightwork”. The couple was convinced they needed to act as fast as possible to prevent the world from becoming devastated by the coronavirus. Pfizer, the US pharmaceutical company, helped with funding.
