Khabib Nurmagomedov has retired from MMA after beating Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254 to retain his lightweight title. As he promised his mother that this would be his final fight.
Khabib’s father and head coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died in July following complications from coronavirus, and the Russian champion said that had played a key role in his decision to leave the sport.
Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov is a Russian retired professional mixed martial artist. He was signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he competed in the lightweight division. With 29 wins and no losses, he retired with an undefeated record, (tied with Georges St-Pierre) in 3rd spot for the longest undefeated streak in UFC.
As of 9 September 2020, he is #2 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings. Fight Matrix ranks him #2 All-Time Lightweight in the world (behind B.J. Penn).
Nurmagomedov is the first Muslim to win a UFC title. A two-time Combat Sambo World Champion, he is trained in sambo, judo, and wrestling. His style of grappling has made him one of the most dominant athletes in the history of MMA. As of September 2019, Nurmagomedov is the most followed Russian celebrity on Instagram, with more than 21 million followers.
